Requirements For PCIe*/NVMe* Solid State Drives

PCIe/NVMe*-Based SSDs Require Specific Hardware, BIOS, And Driver Support

Summary

SATA SSDs use the same interfaces and protocols as hard drives, which have been in systems for years.

PCIe*/NVMe*-based SSDs (Solid State Drive) is included in newer hardware.

Below, are the factors to consider if using older hardware.

Resolution

Hardware

  • A motherboard that supports PCIe* SSD interface
    • Such as PCIe* (Add-In Card), M.2, U.2.
    • There may be multiple connectors, but that does not mean they support the NVMe* standard.
  • System BIOS that supports UEFI 2.3.1 or later AND with NVMe* support.

Operating system

  • Microsoft® Windows 8.1 and newer have an NVMe* driver built in.
  • Prior Windows* versions require an update before/during installation.
